Megg Rose's workshops are designed introduce Deaf and hard of hearing students to the world of theater and the beauty of American Sign Language.
She has performed as a theatre professional and educator for in-school workshops for deaf and hard of hearing since 1996. She received her training at Deaf West Theatre ( www.deafwest.org ). Though she may be a professional entertainer, she is also a mother and has a great love for teaching the performing arts for children
Theatre helps children discover and better understand themselves and others, as well as their relationship with the world. In short, it increases their self-esteem. In the workshops students dance, act, play theatre games, sing songs in American Sign Language, paint, draw, and actively engage their imagination and innate creativity.
Using drama games and theatre techniques, the students will discover the possibilities of both verbal and non-verbal communication, the joy of storytelling and how to use body and space to their best advantage. Workshop lessons can be designed with themes that compliment and support subjects that are being taught in the classroom.
Megg strongly feels it's important to continue to expose the Arts to Deaf children because she understands the oppression and isolation that many children experience growing up in a predominately "hearing world" having done so herself.
Her workshops are an opportunity for the children to grow in confidence and learn about the world in a creative way. Students will be exposed to ASL story telling, improvisation, theatre games, how to move on stage, character break down, cold readings, playwriting, teamwork, acting, dancing, monologues, how to perform in different sized venues, and how to overcome their stage fright.
Ttraditionally, on the last day of workshop, the students perform showcases for other children and their parents.
Length of workshops vary, ranging from 1 to 12 weeks or more (depending on location and number of participants). One day workshops are also available as well.
